Now, it's time to go a bit further and mix two distinct present tenses: Present simple vs. Present continuous.
Have a look at the following image that compares how these two tenses are represented in a timeline👇🏼:
As it can be seen above, these are the main uses of each tense👇🏼:
- PRESENT SIMPLE: habits and routines; facts (general truths); adverbs of frequency.
👉🏼 I study English everyday. (habit/routine)
👉🏼 It rains in April. (general truth)
👉🏼 I never eat meat, because I am vegetarian. (adverb of frequency)
- PRESENT CONTINUOUS: actions that are happening now (in the moment of speaking).
👉🏼 I am studying English at the moment. (event happening now)
What is more, each tense has their own structure. The following picture summarises how each tense is formed.
In case you still have doubts, I share with you the link to a Youtube video where I explain in detail how these two tenses are used. What is more, I also introduce some exercises and correct them!🤙🏼
Have a look at the following picture which summarises every important aspect that has been explained above. I hope it helps you organise your ideas!✌🏼
The most important thing is to have a look at the clues (the time expressions that appear in green in the picture above). Once you know them by 💗 you will be able to complete the following exercise:
- I ___am listening____ (listen) to music at the moment.
- She _____goes______ (go) to the gym on Monday.
- They _____ don't eat_____ (not/eat) meat on Friday.
- My parents ____are watching____ (watch) a new film on TV right now.
- ___do you study___ (you/study) English everyday?
- My dog ___isn't having___ a walk now.
- What ____are you doing____ (you/do) now?
Don’t forget to post your doubts in the comment’s box below or directly ask them to your teacher in your next lesson!✌🏻
