2. PRESENT SIMPLE

Hey learners!💖

It's time to learn about the PRESENT SIMPLE. Have you ever heard about this verb tense?

The PRESENT SIMPLE is one of the most important verbs in English, and what’s more, one of the first tenses that is learnt in English.

This English verb tense is used with:

  • Facts: any kind of assumption à I love English.
  • Habits and routines: actions that are practiced with a regular tendency à I study English every day.
  • Adverbs of frequency: click on it in order to learn more and practice about this issue à I always learn English with this Instagram account.

In order to make it clearer, I recommend you to have a look at the following picture👇🏻:

What is more, it is also necessary to notice that this verb tense is frequently used with some key words rather than others. Thus, I suggest you to pay attention to the following picture and take notes of those important words. These clues will help you to differentiate this verb tense from the others.

Now, it’s time to learn how this verb tense is formed. In order to learn this aspect, have a look at the following picture and try to deduce the rule🤔.

As you can see, there exists two different groups in order to create the PRESENT SIMPLE tense.

1.      Group 1I, YOU, WE, YOU, THEY à In Spanish I call them ‘pelotón’ since they are all together.

2.      Group 2HE, SHE, IT à I call them ‘supernenas’ in Spanish since they are not only different from the rest, but they also take a final ‘-s’ in the affirmative form.

Now, it is also important to make a difference between the affirmative, negative and interrogative form.

  1.          AFFIRMATIVE: Only the second group takes -s. The first group just inserts the VERB, as in the infinitive form.
  2.        NEGATIVE: Either you use DON’T or DOESN’T + VERB. This verb does never take an -s, since it already appears in the auxiliary.
  3.       INTERROGATIVE: In order to create the interrogative form it is necessary to follow the following structure: DO / DOES + SUBJECT + VERB…?

🚨 As you can notice there is an inversion of the subject; in other words, the auxiliary comes before the subject. What is more, no ‘-s’ is attached to the verb.

Additionally, in order to summarise this issue, I recommend you to have a look at the following two pictures in order to make sure you have understood how this verb is formed.

Besides, in order to summarise every explained aspect, I recommend you to have a look at the following picture which clearly explains every key aspect about the PRESENT SIMPLE.
