1. VERB TO BE*

The verb TO BE* is the most irregular verb in English, that is why I use a '*' in order to mention it, because we never say 'I be' but rather 'I am'. Hence, we have to conjugate the 'be*' part.

What is more, this verb means 'ser' or 'estar' in Spanish and it is conjugated as follows:

We ususally use the verb TO BE* to describe people, events, things, the weather....

  • New York is a very big city.
  • You are very intelligent.
  • I am at home.
We also use the verb TO BE* to say how old someone is. Thus, in order to say how old a person is, we use the verb TO BE+ and never the verb HAVE, as we do in Spanish.

  • ✔ He is 10 (years old).
  • ✖ He has 10 (years old).

How would you describe the following people using the verb TO BE*?

  • The bold man __is__ a bit fat.
  • The blonde girl __is__ 5 years old.
  • The guy with the bag __is__ very tall.
  • They __are__ very happy.
