3. PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Hey learners!👋🏼

It's time to learn more about the present tenses, more precisely the Present Continuous tense. Thus, in this post you will learn more about its uses, its structure and you could even practice with some exercises.

First of all, let's introduce the uses. The present simple is used:
  • to talk about actions that are happening now (at the moment of speaking) 👉🏼 I am reading Lu's English blog.
As you can see, you are currently doing that (reading Lu's English blog), you're doing that at this precise moment. If you wanted to locate that action in a timetable, it would have the following appearance👇🏼

Therefore, as it may be obvious the key words employed with this tense are those ones that situate the event in the now-present situation. They are: now, right now, at the moment, Look!, Listen!, today...

Once this is introduced, let's see how this tense is formed. This tense a very simple structure👇🏼👇🏼:

TO BE* (am, is, are) + V-ing

🚨 REMEMBER: If a tense has CONTINUOUS in its 'surname' then the main verb should have the -ING form. This -ing form is called 'gerundio' in Spanish and 'present participle' in English.

Let's see everything clearer by means of a summary-chart👇🏼:

As a kind of summary:
  • ✅AFFIRMATIVE: Subject + TO BE* + V-ing 👉🏼I am studying English.
  • ❌NEGATIVE: Subject + TO BE* + NOT (n't) + V-ing 👉🏼 I am not studying English.
  • ❔INTERROGATIVE: TO BE* + Subject + V-ing + ...? 👉🏼 Are you studying English?
This present tense is easy peasy!✌🏼 Nonetheless, in case you need to know more about it, please, have a look at the second part of my Youtube video where I explain in more detail the Present continuous tense.
