3. PAST SIMPLE

Hi there!✌🏼

It's time to learn a bit more about past simple and past continuous. Yet, first things first, past simple is a widely used tense in English.

We use the past simple tense to talk about:

  • finished actions in the past.
  • past habits or repeated actions in the past.
As it happens with all verb tenses, it is also necessary to study its form:
  • AFFIRMATIVE:   regular (+ -ed) or irregular verbs (2nd column of the📄)
  • NEGATIVE:   didn't + bare form of the verb
  • INTERROGATIVE:   did + subject + bare form of the verb + ?

As it could be seen the auxiliary verb of the past simple tense is DID (the past form of the verb 'do'). As you may have noticed, it is the same form for all the subject pronouns. This makes our life easier!✌🏼

Yet, you should be careful with the regular and irregular verbs. If you still have doubts, have a look at the following list and practice with the exercises below.
We usually have a lot of problems with the pronunciation of the REGULAR VERBS. Thus, the following picture summarises the different possible pronunciations of the -ED ending.

Finally, this video explains in detail the past simple and past continuous tenses.

As I always say, practice makes perfect. Hence, it is necessary to practice more in detail with this verb tense:
